I saw an interesting thread in MSN Money regarding bank holidays and whether or not they should be banned. I am sure all of us know what a bank holiday is but just in case it is not clear to some, Oxford tells us that a public holiday, when banks are officially closed. I wonder if that made it any cleareranyhow, the forum thread elicited a lot of responses from people all over the UK.
This is the initial statement of the editors of the site about bank holidays: Bank holidays can be bad - bad for your life, your health, your relationships, and even your sanity. They can even be bad for the economy, as people take sickies on the Tuesday. Should bank holidays be abolished and the eight days given to us as part of our annual holiday entitlement? Or are they a welcome break from work?
The responses were a mix of yes and no, mainly with the justification that one couldnt get enough holidays. My point of bringing this topic up though is the idea that may be bad for you and the economy. As much as I am trying to think of how bad bank holidays can be for a person financially or otherwise, I dont seem to get it. Now for the economy, yes. I can just imagine how many people dont go to work and take sickies the day after. Anyhow, if any of you want to share your thoughts on this and shed some light on my question, it would be great.
